Review: "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series by Rick Riordan

I finally finished the series today, and ironically, it's Percy Jackson's birthday.

These books are young adult fantasy books. There are five books in the series. Each one covers a major event that is a part of a larger war. The main concept of the books is that the Greek Gods still exist and they are tied to Western Civilization. That means they live in America now; Olympus moves wherever Western Civilization is.

Percy Jackson and his friends are "half-bloods", meaning they are half human and half god. They are the children of the gods. Percy has been kicked out of every school he has ever attended, and finally get to camp half-blood and learns about the gods. Eventually he discovers who his father is. He also learns of a phrophecy that several of those around him think he is meant to fulfill. Percy learns about the Titans, who were the gods before the Olympians and who are violent and would likely destroy the world as it is. In each book Percy goes on a quest to try and stop the Titans from rising.

I enjoyed these books, they are fast reads and each one is tied up nicely at the end. All the books in the series tie together well and would not be hard to understand if one was read on its own. I thought the story was well thought out and there were several plot twists I was not expecting. The story is pretty complex. I gave these books 4.5 out of 5 stars because I think they would be great for anyone getting into fantasy or looking for a fun but intense series.
